1. Pick a model
A five-day school, a two- or three-day hybrid funded through PEP, or a microschool of a dozen to a few dozen students. Hybrids use existing church space and can keep tuition well under the award.
2. Register with the state
Florida private schools file an annual survey with the Department of Education (that creates the school number shown on every listing here), keep attendance and immunization records, meet health, safety and fire codes, and complete Level 2 background screening for staff. The state doesn't license, accredit or set curriculum for private K-12 schools; preschools and child care are licensed separately through DCF.
3. Become a scholarship school
To receive the Private School Scholarship, register with Step Up For Students and/or AAA, submit the compliance documents, and enroll students in EMA. Schools in their first three years post a surety bond or letter of credit, and every participating school gives an annual norm-referenced test.
4. Price against the award
In Hillsborough the 2026-27 award is $8,429 for K-3, $7,837 for 4-8 and $7,644 for 9-12. Many church schools set tuition close to those numbers, with member rates and sibling discounts on top.
5. Let families find you
Parents across the county search for Step Up schools and affordable Christian schools. A verified listing puts you in front of them when they are looking at money, not just at schools.
6. Talk to us before you open
We can share what other Florida congregations have done, review your timeline against the EMA quarterly deadlines, and build your listing so it is ready on day one.
