Federal Scholarship Tax Credit (2027)

Florida opted into the new federal scholarship tax credit in January 2026. Starting in 2027, taxpayers get a dollar-for-dollar federal credit for gifts to approved scholarship organizations, which fund scholarships for Florida students.

The credit comes from the 2025 federal reconciliation law. States had to opt in, and Florida did so on January 28, 2026.

Step Up For Students has said it will run Florida's program through an affiliate, the Step Up, Step Further Scholarship Fund. Application details are expected before the January 1, 2027 start.

For a Hillsborough family whose school charges more than the state award, this is a potential second layer. We will add the application steps as soon as they are published.
