Microschools and learning pods in Hillsborough County

Florida funds microschools as a registered private school, as a PEP hybrid, or as a private tutoring program. The legal form you choose decides which scholarship pays you.

Option 1: registered private school

File the annual FLDOE survey, register with Step Up and/or AAA, and accept the Private School Scholarship ($8,429 K-3 in Hillsborough for 2026-27). Best for five-day programs.

Option 2: PEP hybrid

Meet in person at least two full days a week; families pay from their PEP accounts and cover the rest of the week with a Student Learning Plan. Eleven Hillsborough schools carry the state's PEP flag today.

Option 3: private tutoring program

A Florida-certified teacher can serve a small group as a full-time tutor under the state's tutoring rules; check the current hours and group-size limits with Step Up before you set up.

Where it's happening

In the October 2026 state directory, East Tampa has five of the county's eleven PEP participants, with others in South Tampa, Plant City and Riverview.
